James W. Churchill Memorial Scholarship Fund
This scholarship fund was established in 2009 to honor the memory of James W. Churchill who was 40 years old when he lost his six-month battle with cancer in October 2009. James graduated from Governor Mifflin High School in 1987. He was active in sports, particularly wrestling, which was his favorite sporting activity. Jim’s high school wrestling coach was impressed with his willingness to continually strive to improve. He never became the best wrestler on the team, but he did win some matches, and he never gave up. Jim graduated from Kutztown University in 1991 where he was initiated into the Psi Chi Chapter of the National Honor Society in Psychology. He was employed at R.M. Palmer Company. James enjoyed owning and furnishing his own home in Kenhorst, and he enjoyed hunting and fishing in his free time. He was a very independent, caring person with a positive attitude and always thought the best of everyone he met.
This fund will provide scholarship support to a male senior who is graduating from Governor Mifflin Area Senior High School and who will be pursuing a four-year degree at a college or university after high school. The recipient must be an active participant on the Governor Mifflin High School wrestling team, and must have shown consistent improvement during his participation on the wrestling team. The recipient must be proficient in reading, writing, and speaking the English language. The recipient does not have to intend to participate in an athletic sporting activity beyond high school graduation. If there is more than one student who meets the requirements, the scholarship should be awarded to the student with the highest GPA.
No application is needed. Scholarship is awarded by a committee at Governor Mifflin High School, with consideration given to all Governor Mifflin seniors.
